Vedran Jelenic's Build Tips
Watch out for the proportions. Test your map with the player view mode on ( press f7 during the game and you'll be able to see Duke or Lo Wang ). This way you can test if something is to big ( especially doors and some other sprites ) and resize it to "real world" size. The most common problem in Duke was ( is ) that people never shrink sprites so you get dancing girls even twice as bigger than Duke Nukem ( except they're not supposed to be giant dancing girls ) and the toilet shells are more like swimming pools.
Steal ! Yes, that's right. Steal every good IDEA ( that's only thing you need to steal ) you can find in other maps. If you see something is designed better then something you made check it out and try to do it the same if not even better. Of course. Don't make exactly the same thing. Just take the basic idea and make your own stuff.
Details are very important. Just check out the room you're in. If you're not in a 3rd world country you probably have something else than just walls with holes in it. Try to put all that stuff that surrounds you into your level. Also, if you want to make a realistic looking level don't try to make your own worlds. Just look around and copy that into your map.
Don't use stupid textures on places where they just don't fit. If you wanna make something and there's no good texture for that, make your own texture or just don't use anything.
Shade. Shade everyhing like in real life. At least you can try to do that. Don't make too bright areas if there's no light source etc... If you check out the corner of the room you're in you'll notice that one wall is darker then the other ( or one wall is brighter than the other, depends on which wall you prefer... blah... blah... :P ). So... always make 2 opposite walls darker ( or brighter ) then the other 2 walls. This way you'll get more realistic rooms and corners.
Align textures.( use "." and use "o" for (orient) above windows, doors) It seems that nobody cares about that. People just put on textures and keep them that way. For example. If you use the texture of building and windows don't make half of a window on the corner of the builing or half of a window under the ground. Also, the most common thing is that people put doors on the windows.
Don't use too many textures of the same type. If you do that the map looks stupid, and the playing in that map boring.
Once again. Look around yourself and try to make everything as realistic as you can. If you can't it's your problem and not the problem with Build. It's amazing what you can do if you just try.
When you make buildings, houses and stuff like that don't just make a square and then add a door and windows. Improve your architecture skills and build more complex buildings.
